The show revolves around Anupamaa Shah, a homemaker whose family has a low opinion of her and whose husband cheats on her. She gains more self-respect and becomes more independent. She navigates relationships and societal expectations while on her path of personal growth.<br />

==Plot==<br />
Anupamaa is a middle-aged housewife who toils for her family but is always insulted by her husband, Vanraj, and her mother-in-law, Leela, for being uneducated. Anupamaa's constant emotional supports are her younger son, Samar, and her father-in-law, Hasmukh. However, on her 25th wedding anniversary, upon discovering that Vanraj has cheated on her with his colleague, Kavya, she feels heartbroken and sets out to create her identity. Meanwhile, Anupamaa's elder son, Paritosh, marries Kinjal, while Samar and Nandini, Kavya's niece, fall for each other. Anupamaa and Vanraj divorce, and he marries Kavya soon after her divorce from her husband, Aniruddh.<br />

Anupamaa, along with Samar and Nandini, opens a dance academy due to their shared passion for dance. However, Nandini breaks up with Samar and leaves him forever because of her misunderstandings and insecurities towards him. Anupamaa later reconnects with her college classmate, Anuj Kapadia, who has been in love with her since her college days. Anupamaa eventually falls in love with Anuj, and they marry. Together, they adopt a girl, Chhoti Anu. Anupamaa struggles to balance her responsibilities between her two families. Amidst all this, Kinjal gives birth to a baby girl, Aarya, and learns that Paritosh has cheated on her, but they reconcile for the sake of their child. Anupamaa's daughter, Pakhi, marries Adhik, who is the younger brother and foster son of Anuj's sister-in-law, Barkha. Samar marries a rape victim, Dimple, who herself was divorced by her husband after her rape.<br />

Later on, Chhoti Anu's biological mother, Maya, arrives and takes Chhoti Anu with her. Anuj and Anupamaa feel devastated on Anu's departure, and Anuj leaves Anupamaa to stay with Maya and Chhoti Anu. Maya and Barkha conspire to keep Anuj and Anupamaa apart. Later on, Anupamaa has a chance to be a part of Malti Devi's Academy, Gurukul. Malti Devi is impressed with Anupamaa's hard work and dedication, and offers her a three-year contract to work with her and declares that she would be the heir of Gurukul. Maya realizes her mistake when she tries to separate Anuj and Anupamaa and asks for their forgiveness, but a truck hits her, and Maya dies. Before leaving for America, Anupamaa learns that Anu's health has deteriorated, and she rushes back to her. This angers Malti Devi, so she expels Anupamaa from her Gurukul. Meanwhile, Kavya is pregnant with Aniruddh's child, and Vanraj learns about that and avoids her. Later on, Anupamaa finds Malti Devi roaming in the streets, in a deteriorated condition, and brings her to her house. On Anuj's birthday, the entire family is shocked to know that Malti Devi is Anuj's biological mother, but Anuj refuses to accept her. Later on, Samar is murdered at a party, leaving behind Dimple, who is pregnant with his child. Anupamaa, Vanraj, and Anuj find out Samar's murderer and have him arrested. Paritosh, Kinjal, and Aarya move out of India.<br />

Pakhi, Barkha, and Malti Devi instigate Chhoti Anu against Anupamaa, and she goes against her, whereas Dimple meets a dancer, Tapish, and they become friends. Vanraj tells Dimple to stay away from Tapish, or else he will keep Dimple's child away from her. Kinjal, Paritosh, and Aarya return to India to celebrate Aarya's first birthday. Anupamaa comes to meet Aarya, but Vanraj asks her to leave and tells her to never return to the house. Kavya also leaves the house after Vanraj tells her that her child has no place in this house. Malti Devi and Barkha collaborate to expel Anupamaa from Anuj's life and start instigating Chhoti Anu against Anupama. Anupamaa, Kinjal, Aarya, and Chhoti Anu go out for a picnic, but the car meets with an accident. Although Anupamaa rescues everyone, she is berated by Vanraj and Paritosh. Anupamaa decides to never return to the Shah house and returns to the Kapadia house. Chhoti Anu berates Anupamaa and avoids her. Anuj feels that Anupamaa has never paid attention to Chhoti Anu and the Kapadia family, and has always paid attention to the Shah family, and feels that he has married Anupamaa hastily. Anupamaa then decides to leave Anuj and Chhoti Anu forever and leaves the house. Anuj divorces Anupamaa and renames Chhoti Anu to Aadhya and leaves India<br />

Dimple have a son named Ansh and he spent most of the time with Vanraj. Dimple always remembers Samar. While, Baa, Bapuji, Vanraj and Kavya remains the same. Kavya has a daughter named Mahi but Vanraj doesnt love Mahi. In America, Anuj have a finace named Shruti whom Aadhya loves and wants them to engaged.<br />

Few days later, Anupama and Anuj decides to reunion and get married again but not tell Aadhya. Later, Aadhya learns that Anuj have leaved for India so Aadhya decides to stop him but Devika stops and slaps her leaving Aadhya angry. While, Aadhya secretly leaves the house. While Anupama and Anuj are happy but they both get into a acciident leaving them seperated.<br />

==Synopsis==<br />
''Grihasti'' is based upon the Khurana family. After the death of the family's [[patriarch]], Balraaj, the women realize that they must come together to succeed in their male-dominated society. As a result of this and of destiny, the women become more independent. This change in their life shows the importance of many female roles in society: wife, daughter, grandmother, and sister. It is shown that Rishi (Simar's husband) is having an affair with his secretary Priya. Simar is getting a little doubtful.<br />

The Balraaj family house is taken by the fraudulent Lucky Kapoor and his wife and mother. The Balraaj family are trying to get it back by playing Lucky's trick on him. They disguise themselves as potential buyers of their house and, in the end, they get it back on Holi. But on Holi Manas and Raunak get Rishi high on cannabis and he goes and hugs Priya. Then he tells Simar that he is having an affair. The whole family breaks down especially Simar. Simar finds out that she is pregnant; Priya tells Rishi. Lucky Kapoor comes out of jail and is determined to kill Raunak so he goes to the Balraj house. He gets into a fight with him. Soni interferes and ends up falling down the stairs. She loses a lot of blood so Priya donates her blood to her. She makes Rishi realise that he still loves Simar. So they get back together again.<br />

Eight months later, Simar goes into labour and has a baby boy.<br />

The plot revolves around two neighbors living in [[Pune]]; the Gujarati Thakkar family which consists of Mahindra Thakkar, Urmila Thakkar his wife and Gayatri Thakkar his only daughter, and the Maharashtrian Gokhale family which consists of Balakrishna "Anna" Gokhale, His wife Joytsana, their children Prabhakar, Keshav, Amol, his daughter Vibhavari (whom he disowned as she marries without his concent) and Abhishek. Except Abhishek all his siblings are married and have children. The families have different bitter relations as they have different ideologies, and things get complicated when their children fall in love. They marry and their family accepts it. Abhishek and Thakkar have one mindset while Gayatri and Anna have different mindset and thus there are small arguments which grow.<br />

Gayatri and Abhishek have a son named Krishna, the two families are bitter but pretend to be happy in presence of Krishna. These fights have taken a toll on their health and now Anna has impaired hearing, while on the other hand, Mahendra has a problem of forgetting things easily. Gayatri and Abhishek have been divorced because of a huge misunderstanding involving a third person. Krishna gets to know that his parents have been divorced and the two families separated. Anna supports his daughter in law Gayatri while on the other hand, the Thakkar family supports Abhishek. The reason behind the divorce was that Gayatri saw Abhishek with another girl called Anjali, during their vacation in a hotel room in Goa. A court-hearing takes place at their home itself, which turns out to be inconclusive. Krishna, along with his cousins and Keshav, plans to reunite his parents, and keeps a deal that whoever from his parents gets married first, he will move in with them.<br><br />
Soon, a man named Aprateem Joshi is discovered and selected by Anna to become Gayatri's groom, whereas the Thakkar select a girl named Aishwarya to be Abhishek's bride.<br><br />
However, it is revealed that Aprateem and Aishwarya are actually Bhojpuri goons-in-disguise named Munna Pandey and Munni Pandey. Munna, a lender, gives Keshav some money for a month at 5% interest but Munna deceives him and says he charged 5% interest per day and threatens Keshav. At the time, Keshav overhears Munna talking about getting his sister, Munni Pandey married. Hearing this a devious plan hatches in Keshav's mind to avoid paying the money and proposes to Munna to get his sister married to Abhishek. Munna accepts the offer and Keshav starts training them accordingly and sends them as Aprateem Joshi and Aishwarya respectively to Gokhale and Thakkar families. Keshav also uses Krishna, Chirag, and Ujjwala for his devious plan. Both manage to win the hearts of the families without suspicion and Munni gets set to actually marry Abhishek. However, Munna wants to actually marry Gayatri for her property, shop, and house and threatens to kill Keshav if this doesn't happen.<br />
<br> Mandar, Ujjwala, and Mahendra overhear this conversation and find out about everything. They are caught before they could inform anyone by Munna and taken hostage. Meanwhile, Urmila and Chirag try everything they can to find out about Anjali online, but she finally blocks them. Abhishek manages to free Ujjwala, Mandar, and Mahendra from the goons and everyone rushes to stop the marriage. However, upon telling Anna and Gayatri about this, they refuse to agree and are adamant. They try everything to stop the marriage but no avail. Keshav refuses to speak about anything for fear of his life. Right at their last ritual of marriage, Krishna prays for a miracle and Anjali finally comes to stop the marriage and clear Gayatri's doubt about his affair with Anjali and what really happened during their vacation in the hotel in Goa. She told that her marriage was fixed with a bad guy, how Abhishek helped her by pretending to be her lover. This explanation of Anjali made Gayatri realize her mistake. Abhishek weds Gayatri again. But the Thakkar and Gokhale are now in an argument that where will Krishna live. As they say interest is more sweet than the principal amount.<br />
