In [[Malayalam]], "Athavanad" is an abbreviation of "Azhvanchery Thambrakkal Vazhunna Nadu". The region was under the rule of the [[Azhvanchery Thamprakkal]] feudal lords in ancient times. ''Azhvanchery Thamprakkal'' were usually present at the ''Ariyittu Vazhcha''of a new [[Zamorin]] of [[History of Kozhikode|Calicut]]. The district is subdivided into six development blocks called tahsils, namely Palari, Baloda Bazar, Kasdol, Bilaigarh, Bhatapara and Simga and 3 subdivisions namely Baloda Bazar, Bhatapara and Bilaigarh.

The district administration is headed by the district magistrate cum collector, the present Collector and District Magistrate to take charge of the newly formed district is Rajesh Singh Rana.
