Gaurav beats up a rival actor to appease Aryan, but is instead punished by his idol; heartbroken, the fan plans revenge.

Sharma had originally conceived the idea of ''Fan'' in 2006 and recited the story to Chopra, who advised him against the challenging project for his directorial debut. In the same year, [[Yash Chopra]] read it to Khan, who expressed interest in being part of the project. The project was revived in late 2013, and Khan underwent 3D scanning in 2014. Principal photography began in July 2014 and was completed by November 2015. ''Fan'' was a songless film; a soundtrack album consisting of a marketing song in different languages was composed by [[Vishal–Shekhar]] and the [[original score]] was done by [[Andrea Guerra (composer)|Andrea Guerra]].

''Fan'' was heavily marketed; after several delays, it was released internationally on 15 April 2016. The film opened to positive reviews from critics, who praised Khan's performance, visual effects and action sequences, with criticism focused on the editing and the loosely written script. The film collected {{INR}}1.2 billion in India and {{INR}}679 million from overseas territories, for a total of {{INR}}1.88 billion against a production budget of {{INR}}1.20 billion. At the 63rd Filmfare Awards, ''Fan'' received the [[Filmfare Award for Best Special Effects]].

== Plot ==
Gaurav Chandna is a [[Delhi]]-based hardcore and obsessive fan of [[Bollywood]] [[superstar]] Aryan Khanna. He harbours a crush on Neha, his friend and neighbour who works at a call centre. Gaurav's face bears an uncanny similarity to Aryan's, which helps him win the local talent show by impersonating Aryan. Encouraged by his parents, he embarks on a train journey to [[Mumbai]] to meet Aryan and present him with the trophy won by impersonating to wounded him.

When Sid Kapoor, a fellow actor, expresses harsh sentiments about Aryan to the [[News media|press]], an infuriated Gaurav beats him and makes him apologise to Aryan while he records it. The video is uploaded to the Internet, where Aryan sees it and has Gaurav arrested. Gaurav is mercilessly beaten in jail, where Aryan angrily reprimands him, declaring that Gaurav is not his fan and that he had Gaurav arrested. Gaurav asks for five minutes of Aryan's time, at which Aryan scoffs at giving the fan even five seconds. Devastated, Gaurav returns home and burns all of his Aryan memorabilia, vowing revenge against Aryan for turning away his fan.

A year later in [[London]], Gaurav goes to [[Madame Tussauds]], impersonating Aryan and purposely creating havoc which leads to Aryan being arrested by police. Released on bail, Aryan receives a call from Gaurav, who reveals what he did and offers to stop troubling Aryan if he will apologise. Aryan refuses, and Gaurav disguises himself as a crew-member on Aryan's show.

Aryan is scheduled to perform at the wedding of a billionaire's daughter in Dubrovnik, Croatia. After performing a dance show, Aryan receives a card with the message "Say sorry", and realises that Gaurav is nearby. Meanwhile, Gaurav poses as Aryan and molests one of the lady guests. The billionaire berates the real Aryan and makes him leave the event. Outside, Aryan spots Gaurav and chases him, though Gaurav escapes. The molestation incident is reported by the media, resulting in a tarnished reputation and boycotts of Aryan's shows.

Gaurav invades Aryan's home in India and vandalizes his trophy collection, even frightening his wife Bela and Aryan's children. Aryan visits Gaurav's parents and meets Neha. With their help, Aryan impersonates Gaurav at the local talent show; he declares Gaurav's love to Neha and tells about Gaurav's acts, to the ire of the audience. This provokes Gaurav, who shoots at Aryan with a gun. Aryan again chases Gaurav and subdues him after a bloody fightings. Enraged, Aryan asks Gaurav to give up impersonating him and live a normal life. Gaurav responds by telling Aryan that he has destroyed his life and reminds him that he has not apologised yet. Gaurav flings himself off the roof, dying with a smile.

Aryan's name is cleared from all the controversies, but the ordeal haunts him, and his name is linked with Gaurav's both in his mind and in the eyes of the public. On his next birthday, Aryan goes out to the roof to greet his fans. When he is about to turn, he sees a haunting glimpse of Gaurav in the crowd, smiling up at him, upon which he turns back to the crowd with greater respect and appreciation.

It is then revealed that the person they had beaten is Jai, Vishi's lookalike, leading them to be badly battered. [[Assistant commissioner of police|ACP]] Shirke chases Vishi, who escapes. However, Shirke then arrests Jai and hands him over to a group of gangsters led by Pedro, but Jai single-handedly kills them all. It is revealed that Jai is AJ, a professional assassin.

An enraged Xavier tries to kill Anusha to get AJ married to Marina, which leaves her brutally injured. Jai escapes to India, and he is in the process of getting her treated.

Jai asks Vishi to go to Bangkok disguised as AJ in order to fool Xavier and Marina, while he makes time to get Anusha operated on as she is expecting a baby. Vishi agrees to help and goes to Bangkok with his friend Musa. Shirke finds AJ's lookalike and tries to inform Xavier, but he is murdered in a style that triggers suspicion in Xavier's mind. Upon realizing the situation, Marina tortures Musa to find out the truth, and Musa reveals that Vishi is the one who masqueraded as AJ. Xavier hatches a plan to bring AJ to Bangkok by kidnapping Anusha and her child.

However, it is revealed that Vishi is actually in Mumbai as he and AJ switched their places in the airport at a time after the job was done. AJ reaches the spot and kills all of Xavier's henchmen. In a fight with Marina, AJ smashes her against the furnace, and Marina is burned alive. After killing Xavier, AJ runs away with Anusha. Later, the child is revealed to be safe, rescued by one of Xavier's henchmen, Robert. AJ and Vishi meet at the airport, and Anusha requests that Vishi marry Khushi soon.

Five years after the events of ''[[Drishyam 2]]'', Georgekutty’s life appears stable. He has adapted the story of his past into a successful film and continues to live with his family while attempting to move forward. However, journalists Yami and Rony begin investigating possible real-life inspirations behind the film, particularly the circumstances surrounding Varun’s death. Georgekutty denies any connection between the film and real events, despite increasing public scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Georgekutty encounters Jose and Mary, who seek his forgiveness for past wrongdoing. He assures them that Jose’s actions were not wrong and provides financial assistance to help them restart their lives. At home, Georgekutty and Rani search for a suitable marriage proposal for their daughter Anju through the marriage broker Mathayi. However, each promising alliance is repeatedly disrupted by anonymous interference. Georgekutty later traces the calls with assistance from retired police officer Suresh Babu and identifies the callers as Rajan and his wife Shanthi. Rajan, previously suspended for assisting Georgekutty, had suffered severe personal and financial consequences, including his daughter’s educational disruption and a suicide attempt that left her unable to speak. Feeling abandoned after Georgekutty failed to recognize his situation, Rajan develops resentment toward him.

Shortly afterward, Georgekutty becomes aware of suspicious activity near his plantation after Rani reports seeing an unknown person in the area. He discovers that a pit had been dug and later refilled. While investigating, he is secretly observed by Sahadevan. Sahadevan, who was suspended from police service, has since become unstable and financially desperate. He begins investigating Georgekutty in an effort to uncover evidence related to Varun’s death and to have him arrested. In the process, Sahadevan forcibly obtains medical records from Dr. Ranjini, Anju’s psychiatrist, and intimidates Pathrose to gather further information. He also retrieves details related to the unidentified skeletal remains previously used in the case. His activities are reported to [[Inspector general of police]] Thomas Bastin by Sabu, leading to Sahadevan’s questioning and subsequent arrest order. However, Sahadevan refuses to cooperate.

At the same time, Bastin is approached by Prabhakar, who reveals that Geetha, now living in the [[United States]], has developed severe depression following Varun’s funeral and the unresolved circumstances surrounding his death. Motivated by concern for her condition and resentment toward Georgekutty’s continued freedom, Prabhakar decides to act against him. He collaborates with Sahadevan and Bastin to gather evidence and reopen the case. Prabhakar later orchestrates a marriage proposal for Anju with Avira, a [[United Arab Emirates|UAE]]-based businessman whom he has secretly manipulated into cooperation by resolving his financial difficulties. He also influences marriage brokers to ensure the proposal is accepted.

Prabhakar and Bastin then plan to entrap Georgekutty by staging an incident in which Anju is drugged and falsely implicated in the death of Avira. The plan includes the use of falsified psychiatric records suggesting that Anju suffers from Sexual Aversion Syndrome, allegedly causing violent behavior when approached. This is intended to link the staged incident to Varun’s earlier death and secure convictions against Georgekutty and Anju. However, the plan begins to unravel when Sahadevan deviates from the agreed sequence of events. During the staged encounter, Anju unexpectedly regains consciousness, causing panic. Sahadevan and Avira flee, and Anju is left injured. Georgekutty arrives shortly thereafter and deduces that the pit on his plantation was intended for concealment of Avira’s body. He mobilizes local support through his brother-in-law Rajesh, preventing further concealment of evidence, and later locates Sahadevan, who is assaulted and coerced into recording a confession implicating Prabhakar and Bastin.

Following these events, Georgekutty offers to surrender to the police, accompanied by [[Advocate]] Renuka, while setting conditions regarding his family’s safety. Prabhakar, however, rejects the confession evidence and threatens continued action against Anju. Georgekutty responds by stating that he will not hesitate to use force if his family is endangered. Renuka later learns that Anju was attacked by Georgekutty himself in order to misdirect the investigation and protect her from external threats, with Sahadevan being framed for the act. As Georgekutty’s surrender is broadcast publicly, Prabhakar confronts Geetha, who remains emotionally devastated and expresses that she still does not feel closure, indicating ongoing psychological trauma within the family. Although hearing that Georgekutty surrendered, Geetha is not fully satisfied and wants Anju to be next, making Prabhakar in turmoil.
