== Plot ==

The narrative is about a common [[Farmer|farmer's]] life, where he is forced to sell his land and work as a farm laborer in his own land. One such story revolves around Rahul "Rahulya" Patil. His father, Dattaram also had sold his land and is living as a watchman in his own land. One day, the landlord, Shinde, beats up Dattaram and Rahulya challenges that he would get back his land. Soon, his family shifts to Pune, where both the father-son duo work as porters in a [[Farmers' market|vegetable market]]. One day, the local goons forcibly extort money from an old man, Rahulya beats them up and lands in jail. There, he meets Nanya, a powerful gangster with the local [[Member of the Legislative Assembly|MLA]]'s support. Rahulya joins hands with Nanya after being released from jail. Meanwhile, he also falls in love with Manda, a tea seller.

Rahulya soon earns his name after accidentally murdering the Mayor and Nanya bails him out again, by fabricating the murder as suicide with false testimonials from the witnesses. Rahulya, with his new fame, sets out to solve the vegetable vendors's problems by promising that he would buy their products at rates more than the current prices. Though he is appreciated by the vendors, Dattaram rejects him. Soon, Rahulya is a prominent member in Nanya's gang. One day, Pitya and Daya complain to Nanya that they failed to annex land owned by Rahulya's ''[[teacher|masterji]]''. Rahulya settles his own personal score and annexes the land by shooting Masterji in front of his family. Nanya bails him out by producing masterji's uncle as the killer. Rahulya is completely disowned by his family and is thrown out of his home. Though Manda is apprehensive of Rahul, she believes that he is innocent. One day, Nanya invites Rahulya to his birthday party; in a twist, Rahulya murders him that night, believing that he sexually predated his mother and sister. [[Sub-inspector|SI]] Rajveer Singh, witnesses the murder and puts Rahulya behind bars after a physical brawl. After several months, he comes out on bail.

Rahulya is now the gangster of the town and everyone fears him. One night, a [[Preadolescence|pre-teenager]] Siddharth aka Sidhu comes to meet Rahulya for help and Rahulya adopts him as his brother. Meanwhile, Rajveer takes pity on Rahulya's family and constantly warns Rahulya of grave consequences on taking law in his hands, but to no avail. Rajveer now decides to leave the fate of the gangsters to themselves knowing that only one would be left behind upon killing each others's gang. He further intensifies the inter-gang rivalry by killing members of both the gang members without each others's knowledge.

Rahulya, though a rich man feels lonely. As he goes to the market place, Dattaram despises him. Manda's father Satya too shouts at Rahulya that he would never marry off his daughter to him. Enraged, Rahulya hits him. Manda then hits Rahulya and breaks up with him. Rahulya becomes even more dreaded gangster: he starts extortions, captures many peoples's lands and turns his eyes on Dattaram's land and gets his vengeance by killing Shinde. An elated Rahulya shares the news to Dattaram, but isn't happy as usual because of Rahulya's coercive methods. During one of the land settlements, he comes across a happy family where the father is proud of his sons's achievements. After hearing this, Rahulya now has a change of heart.

As he returns to the marketplace, he meets Dattaram and asks him to come with him and that he would join politics. Dattaram lashes out that he had many chances to mend his ways but he didn't. As Rahulya is about to leave, The local MLA is informed of Rahulya joining politics and tips Pitya and Daya to murder Rahulya. On the day of [[Ganesh Chaturthi|Vinayaka Chaturthi]], Rajveer [[Encounter killings by police|encounter-kills]] the MLA and the duo end up chasing Rahulya on [[Pune]] roads to murder him. Rahulya quickly phones Sidhu about the happenings and asks him to inform everyone. Sidhu and Rahulya reach the market. Meanwhile, Dattaram also calls and informs Rajveer of the happenings and arrives at the market place. Rahulya now comes out of hiding and both of them confront the Daya-Pitya duo. As the duo are captured, Rahulya surrenders himself to the police. Sidhu takes out his gun and shoots Rahulya, killing him. He reveals that he is masterji's grandson and promised to avenge his death to his dying mother by murdering Rahulya in the marketplace. Rajveer then encounters and kills Pitya-Daya. As Rahulya's dead body is about to be cremated, everybody weeps and Dattaram frantically laughs as he is reminded of Rahulya's words to smile at least once. As Rajveer leaves, he thinks that Rahulya needed only 6 feet of land despite owning 300 acres.

When Raj Shekhar hears about it, he orders to get out from his area, but the henchman desperately comes to meet Aparna Bai to take her with him. By the other henchmen, Raj Shekhar knows about it, as a result, the henchman was killed by Raj Shekhar, but Aparna Bai survives and gives birth a daughter Kankabati. Some years later, Raj Shekhar comes to know it and kidnaps Kankabati to take revenge on Aparna Bai.
Years pass, Raj Shekhar's son Shashanka Shekhar ([[Mithun Chakraborty]]), returns to his house. == Plot ==
The film is set in 1942, when the [[British Raj]] was declining in power. It was a time when many Indian citizens were either working for the British regime or rallying in underground meetings and protests against them. In this atmosphere, Narendra Singh ([[Anil Kapoor]]) falls in love with Rajeshwari Pathak ([[Manisha Koirala]]). Their romance is shown to develop in spite of the political and social unrest at the time.

Narendra's father, Diwan Hari Pratap Singh ([[Manohar Singh]]), is a loyal British employee working for the brutal British General Douglas ([[Brian Glover]]), who is infamous for tracking down and executing citizens who are believed to be revolutionaries. Rajeshwari's father, Raghuveer Pathak ([[Anupam Kher]]), is a revolutionary fighting against British rule, as he holds a grudge against Douglas for murdering his son. When Narendra asks Raghuveer for Rajeshwari's hand in marriage, Raghuveer becomes livid. However, Narendra declares that he is willing to sacrifice everything for Rajeshwari and convinces Raghuveer of his love for her. Raghuveer relents but tells Narendra to talk to his father first. When Narendra does so, Hari is angry that his son has chosen the daughter of a revolutionary, but he pretends that he will do anything for Narendra's happiness.

However, Hari tricks Narendra into revealing Raghuveer's secret location and leaks the information to Major Bisht ([[Danny Dengzongpa]]) and the British authorities. Soon, police barge into Raghuveer's hideaway and try to kill him, only to find him waiting to light a bomb, killing both himself and the men. Rajeshwari, who was out at that time, realizes what has happened and runs away. She is taken into refuge by Shubhankar ([[Jackie Shroff]]), a compatriot of Raghuveer who has learned of his death. Under Shubhankar's tutelage, Rajeshwari follows her father's revolutionary path. Meanwhile, Narendra gets furious at his father for using him to kill Raghuveer and drive Rajeshwari away. Promising to make up to Rajeshwari and help her cause, Narendra pledges to become a revolutionary by severing all ties with his father; even Bisht's daughter Chanda ([[Chandni (Bollywood actress)|Chandni]]) does the same after witnessing Bisht murdering her teacher Abid Ali Baig ([[Pran (actor)|Pran]]), who is a revolutionary allied with Shubhankar, much to Bisht's remorse.

To prove his point, Narendra attempts to murder Douglas in front of the city but is caught in the act after shooting down a few soldiers. Narendra is then convicted and sentenced to hang for attempted murder. Douglas then orders his troops to fire at the town square, resulting in the deaths of several citizens, including Chanda. However, Shubhankar saves Narendra from being hanged, and Bisht develops a change of heart after witnessing Chanda's death, helping Shubhankar and Narendra finish off Hari and the remaining loyalists and stabbing Douglas with a flagpole. With the loyalists dead, Narendra reconciles with Rajeshwari while Shubhankar hangs Douglas to death, avenging all those who perished under Douglas' wrath. The film ends with Narendra, Rajeshwari, Shubhankar, Bisht, and the surviving citizens hoisting and saluting the Indian flag.

[[Kamna Chandra]], one of the scriptwriters of the film, had gone to the United States to meet her daughters Tanuja and [[Anupama Chopra|Anupama]] (whom Vidhu Vinod Chopra would later marry) as they were studying there. Having watched Chopra's film ''[[Parinda]]'' on video and being impressed with it, both of them asked their mother to write a story and approach him to direct it. After returning, Chandra met Chopra at Natraj Studios. She made him listen to two or three of her ideas, among which he liked one and asked her to develop it. Chandra finished the script and dialogues by a year, until a day when Chopra himself called her and suggested that they should make a love story set in another era instead of the present time. This provoked Chandra, who could not sleep that night. However, she became excited in the next few days. [[Nana Patekar]], who had previously worked with Chopra in ''[[Parinda]]'' (1989), was selected to portray Raghuvir Pathak. ==Plot==
After a lustful [[Thakur (Indian title)|Thakur]] in the village of Chandanghat rapes a young girl, she kills herself. Thereafter, the Thakur is killed by what the local people call the girl's [[vengeful spirit]]. Then the Thakur's son is also reportedly killed by the same spirit. Twenty years after the Thakur's death, his grandson Kumar comes to the village and is warned by the locals that the spirit will kill him as well, but he does not believe them. He hears the singing voice of the supposed spirit the first night from the swamp. The next day as he wakes up, he finds out about Radha, a carefree girl, who is the niece of an old man, Ramlal.

The singing continues the second night, but Kumar is unable to find the identity of the girl singing the song. He notices that there is a source of light in his house on the terrace. The next day, Kumar finds that his coat is lost. The news reaches Radha that Kumar has been killed. Radha does not believe this and runs into the forest, where Kumar comes in front of her. He says it was not he that was killed, but another man wearing his suit. He was killed in the swamp under the same tree where his father and grandfather were killed.

Later that night, Kumar sees Laxman, his servant arguing with a girl. Laxman explains that the one who was under the tree was his sister's husband. He showed him light everyday from the terrace, and Laxman has stolen the coat and given it to him. Radha advises him to leave, since a person wearing his coat was killed by the spirit. Kumar doesn't.

Ramlal forbids Radha to meet Kumar, as people say she would be killed too. Kumar, meanwhile tries to figure out who is doing all this. Seeing Radha so sad, Ramlal tells her to call Kumar near the swamp where they will talk. Kumar goes to the swamp, and the spirit tries to kill him, but he escapes. Radha finds out that the one who was pretending to be the spirit of the girl was none other than her uncle Ramlal. It was Ramlal's daughter who had been raped by Thakur, so he killed Thakur, his son and was trying to kill his grandson now. Police arrive and persuade Ramlal to surrender himself. Kumar and Radha meet each other and have a happy ending.

Honest truck driver Balwant watch helplessly as the owners of the trucking company he works for mauled his brother, Jaswant to death. When he lodges a complaint with the police the inspector instead arrest him for this crime; the trucking company owners then burn his house killing his pregnant wife Sumati. Years later Balwant who now calls himself Karamvir operates a court called 'Teesri Adalat' by sentencing wrong-doers to death in a judge and executor style. However he is unaware that Sumati is still alive and has given birth to twins Rajesh and Mahesh; while Mahesh was separated at birth and grows up with Inspector Ram Avtar and his wife - Rajesh is taking care of his mother as she loses her mental balance in the trauma. Rajesh and Mahesh do get to unite as the girls they are in love with are link to each other. After a few misjudgments of situations at hand Rajesh and Mahesh decides that they will bring Teesri Adalat to the court of law - at any cost.

After Laxmi has had three still-births, her husband, Satyaprakash and his mother are afraid she will not be able to give any more births, and therefore there will be no one to carry the name of the family forward. So they propose that Satyaprakash gets married for a second time, to which Laxmi consents to, and as such he marries Rukmani. After this marriage Laxmi gets pregnant and gives birth to a son, Rajkumar, and shortly thereafter Rukmani too gives birth to a son, Lakhan. Rajkumar is abducted, and disappears from their lives. Thereafter, Satyaprakash is arrested for the murder of a contractor, and sentenced to prison. Rukmani and her brother, Buddiram, take over running the household, and inflict abuse on Laxmi. Years later, a young man appears claiming to be the missing son of Laxmi and Satyaprakash, and he attempts to bring some sense and honor for poor Laxmi. But this does not last for long, when Satyaprakash is released from prison, he recognizes the young man, as his fellow prison inmate, and much to the shock and dismay of Laxmi, asks him to leave the house, little knowing that he has now thrown open the door for Buddhiram to kill him and Laxmi.

The film came to wider attention in the English-speaking world when its opening song "[[Jaan Pehechan Ho]]" (a Hindi-Urdu phrase roughly translated as "we should get to know each other") was included in the opening credits of ''Ghost World'' and used in the 2011 commercial ''The Date'' for Heineken. The song was sung by Bollywood music legend [[Mohammed Rafi]]. The lead dancer in the song as shot in the film was [[Laxmi Chhaya]]. The psychedelic choreography was done by [[Herman Benjamin]], who also sang the song as picturised in the film.

==Plot==
The film begins off in good, time-honoured crime-riddled way; on a dark night, wealthy Seth Sohanlal, stepping drunkenly out of a nightclub, is run down by a speeding car. Seth Sohanlal dies right there on the sidewalk and the scene moves to a seedy room overlooking the nightclub. This room is occupied by Khanna (Hiralal) who gives a hefty wad of currency notes to an unseen man being hired by him to murder Seth Sohanlal. Khanna then sets about making a series of telephone calls - to a doctor, whom he tells that a medical certificate will have to be made; to a mysterious young girl, whom he tells that the will needs to be sent to the "right place"; and to another man, whom he tells that the will will reach him the next morning - but in no case does the audience see whom Khanna is speaking to. Khanna then telephones Seth Sohanlal's niece, Asha ([[Nanda (actress)|Nanda]]), and breaks the news of her uncle's death. The loud sobs and shrieks of a devastated Asha get amplified when she hears some gunshots at the other end of the line as another faceless figure in a long coat and hat has entered Khanna's room and shot him point-blank. Khanna drops dead with his blood dripping strangely onto the receiver of the dangling telephone.

A few days later, it is announced at a nightclub that the seven winners of a "lucky draw" held earlier that evening have won a free fortnight-long trip to an unspecified destination abroad and will be going in a chartered airplane. These fortunate people are Barrister Rakesh ([[Pran (actor)|Pran]]), Dharamdas ([[Dhumal (actor)|Dhumal]]), Kishan (Manmohan), Kitty Kelly ([[Helen (actress)|Helen]]), Dr. Acharya ([[Madan Puri]]), Madhusudan Sharma ([[Tarun Bose]]), and finally, someone whom the audience has encountered earlier, Asha, though she now seems more composed. Soon, these seven people are in their chartered airplane, off for their vacation abroad, when the pilot announces that they are having to make an emergency landing at an anonymous remote island due to some technical issues. The pilot also tells the seven passengers and the only flight attendant who is on board, Anand ([[Manoj Kumar]]), that they are free to explore the area of the island while the repairs are going on. However, as soon as Anand and the seven passengers alight from the airplane, the pilot shockingly dumps their bags out and the airplane takes off without them, leaving them all stranded on the island. At the same time, a mysterious, unseen woman begins singing an eerie song on the island without the woman ever being visible. The eight people follow the direction of the woman's voice and finally arrive at a vast and spooky mansion. The mansion seems to be unoccupied except for a comical South Indian [[lungi]]-clad butler ([[Mehmood Ali|Mehmood]]), who is in charge of the mansion and has been weirdly expecting the arrival of the castaways. The butler also knows each of these people by name and has been given a letter listing all of these people except Anand.

Further, everyone discovers that the butler has a diary which, besides containing a daily expense account, also contains a message addressed to the entire group, accusing each of these people of having conspired to kill Seth Sohanlal and passing a death sentence on them. There is instant consternation, disbelief and fear for the people now having to pay up with their own lives and the mysterious woman begins singing the song again. That night, Anand goes on a recce of his fellow guests' rooms, peering in through the keyholes, when he witnesses Rakesh having fallen in love with Kitty and flirting with her; Dr. Acharya clinging his hands to a bottle of poison; and Dharamdas hiding a fearsome-looking dagger under his pillow. Anand is caught out in his night-time perambulations by Kishan but neither says anything to the other, while the butler's suspicious actions indicate the presence of an unknown person in the mansion. The next day passes uneventfully, but at dinnertime, everyone is worried as Kishan is nowhere to be found in the mansion. Following dinner, Anand and Asha together go searching for Kishan through the ruins scattered across the island with a torch as well as a gun that Anand has mysteriously brought with him when the two are shocked to stumble onto Kishan, stabbed to death. Anand discovers a bit of half-smoked cigar and a letter addressed to the group next to Kishan's dead body. The letter states that Kishan was the driver of the car and the man hired by Khanna that ran down Seth Sohanlal and that is why he is now been killed.

At the same time, Anand reveals that the dagger used to murder Kishan was none other than the one which Dharamdas had hidden under his pillow, causing everyone to immediately corner Dharamdas and try to get him to confess to Kishan's murder, but Dharamdas pleads his innocence. The very next evening, the innocence of Dharamdas is proved when Anand and Asha stumble onto his strangled dead body in the courtyard of a ruined church and the mysterious woman begins singing another verse of her creepy song. Anand concludes that the culprit is among them and it becomes clear that everyone was connected to Seth Sohanlal; Rakesh wrote Seth Sohanlal's will on Khanna's orders, while Kitty was Seth Sohanlal's private secretary who sent his will to Rakesh on Khanna's instructions, though neither knew about the other. The next day, Anand notices Rakesh hiding an [[axe]] and becomes suspicious of his intentions. Just then, Dr. Acharya appears exclaiming that Sharma has been apparently killed with an axe and another letter addressed to the group is discovered next to his apparent dead body. The letter states that Sharma was Khanna's co-conspirator in Seth Sohanlal's murder and that is why he is also now been killed. Now only three men - Anand, Rakesh and Dr. Acharya - and two women - Asha and Kitty - are left alive and terrified on the island along with the butler.

That night, Dr. Acharya catches the butler acting suspiciously and learns his secret before a scuffle ensues between them both. In the presence of Asha and Kitty, a stabbed Dr. Acharya enters the dining room, utters Anand's name and breathes his last. Anand and Rakesh accuse each other of Dr. Acharya's murder while Asha begins questioning her faith in Anand. The next day, Kitty goes for a walk by herself and is strangled to death by a rope. Rakesh and Asha, who have been searching for Kitty, are shocked to discover her dead body and Anand's hat next to it. Rakesh witnesses Anand running away from the crime scene and begins pursuing him but loses his trail. In a fit of rage, Rakesh tries to rape Asha in the mansion in the middle of the night. Asha escapes from Rakesh but runs into him again as Rakesh collapses dead with two daggers in his back. The lights in the mansion are switched off, which indicates that the killer has arrived and that Asha is next. The killer approaches Asha and she falls unconscious in fear before the killer carries Asha to a secret room. After she regains consciousness, Asha discovers that the killer is none other than Sharma, who reveals that he had only employed the butler to make the necessary arrangements on the island, and posing as one of the castaways, he killed Kishan and Dharamdas. He then convinced Dr. Acharya to declare him dead on the pretext that it would help him investigate the killer, and later killed Dr. Acharya as well with Kitty and Rakesh.

Just then, Anand appears at the scene and reveals that he is actually an undercover police inspector on the mission to nab Sharma, an escaped convict whose real name is Madanlal. Madanlal reveals to Anand and Asha that Khanna and Seth Sohanlal were his partners in smuggling, but he was betrayed by them after being arrested by the police. Khanna also had Seth Sohanlal killed to usurp the share of his money, but Madanlal escaped from prison and murdered Khanna. He then ensured that his targets "won" the lucky draw held at the nightclub and decided to take the trip to murder Khanna's remaining five assistants too. Madanlal then ties up both Anand and Asha and plays the game of Russian Roulette with them. However, the butler secretly arrives and releases Anand, who attacks Madanlal as he is about to shoot Asha with the only bullet. In the ensuing scuffle, Madanlal escapes from the mansion and runs towards the seashore but an airplane full of police officers lands on the island and Madanlal is arrested for his crimes. The "ghost" woman who sings the ominous song turns out to be the butler's mentally-ill sister (Naina). The film ends with Anand, Asha, the butler and his sister leaving the ill-fated island on the airplane.

According to film expert Rajesh Subramanian, a cold war prevailed between Mehmood and Manoj Kumar during the making of the film. Kumar tried to convince the director to discard the song "Hum kaale hain toh kya hua", which has picturised on Mehmood, from the film. However, it was kept and went on to become a hit and one of the highlights of the film.
