There is a legend, probably from the 19th century, which talks about how the Croatian [[Stephen Držislav of Croatia|king Držislav]], captured by the [[Republic of Venice|Venetians]], played a [[chess]] match. His opponent was Doge [[Pietro II Orseolo]]. He won and became free, and in some versions of the story he also got power over the [[Dalmatia]]n cities. It first came into use in Croatian coat of arms around year 1495, as depicted on a temple hall located in [[Innsbruck]], [[Austria]]. There is likelyhood that it has been borrowed by the [[House of Habsburg]] (who ruled the [[Hungary|Hungarian]]-[[Croatia]]n throne at the time) from other [[West Slavs|West Slavic]] coats of arms, as the silver-red colored pattern was popular among the 12–14th century [[Szlachcic|Polish]] and [[Moravia|Czech]] noble families. The cheque pattern in [[Europe]]an [[heraldry]] was likely inspired by the board game of [[chess]].&lt;br /&gt;

It is considered as the [[national symbols|national symbol]] of Croatia, and is prominently displayed at [[sporting event]]s. As such, the pattern in these colors remains associated mostly with the nation of Croatia.&lt;br /&gt;

The [[leaves]] of the common alder are short-stalked, rounded, up to {{convert|10|cm|0|abbr=off}} long with a slightly wedge-shaped base and a wavy, serrated margin. They have a glossy dark green upper surface and paler green underside with rusty-brown hairs in the angles of the veins. As with some other trees growing near water, the common alder keeps its leaves longer than do trees in drier situations, and the leaves remain green late into the autumn. As an introduced species, the common alder can affect the ecology of its new locality. It is a fast-growing tree and can quickly form dense woods where little light reaches the ground, and this may inhibit the growth of native plants. The presence of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria and the annual accumulation of leaf litter from the trees also alters the nutrient status of the soil. It also increases the availability of phosphorus in the ground, and the tree&#039;s dense network of roots can cause increased sedimentation in pools and waterways. The common alder is used as a pioneer species and to stabilise river banks, to assist in flood control, to purify water in waterlogged soils and to moderate the temperature and nutrient status of water bodies. It can be grown by itself or in mixed species plantations, and the nitrogen-rich leaves falling to the ground enrich the soil and increase the production of such trees as [[Juglans|walnut]], [[Douglas-fir]] and [[Populus|poplar]] on poor quality soils. It originates from [[Cornouaille]] and the [[Vannes|Pays de Vannes]] in the [[département]]s of [[Finistère]] and [[Morbihan]]. Due to its small size, modest requirements, good productivity and ability to exploit poor and marginal terrain, it was well suited to traditional Breton agriculture.&amp;lt;ref name=inra/&amp;gt; A herdbook was established in 1886.&amp;lt;ref name=dad/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref name=pierre/&amp;gt; The breed was in the past numerous; at the beginning of the twentieth century there were about 500,000.
