&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;General elections&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; were held in [[Kingdom of Sikkim|Sikkim]] in 1958 to elect members of the [[State Council (Sikkim)|State Council]].&amp;lt;ref name=HB&amp;gt;Hamlet Bareh (2001) &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Encyclopaedia of North-East India: Sikkim&amp;#039;&amp;#039; Mittal Publications, p17&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; The [[Sikkim State Congress]] emerged as the largest party, winning seven of the 14 elected seats.&amp;lt;ref name=HB/&amp;gt; Voter turnout was around 35%.&amp;lt;ref name=HB/&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

==Electoral system==&lt;br /&gt;
The [[State Council (Sikkim)|State Council]] was established in 1953 by the [[Chogyal]].&amp;lt;ref name=HB2&amp;gt;Bareh, p16&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; It originally had 18 members, of which 12 were elected and six (including the President) appointed by the Chogyal.&amp;lt;ref name=HB2/&amp;gt; Of the 12 elected members, six were for the [[Nepali Indian|Nepali community]] and six for the [[Lepcha people|Lepcha]] and the [[Bhutia]] communities.&amp;lt;ref name=HB2/&amp;gt; For the 1958 elections the number of seats was increased to 20. Candidates for election to the Council had to be at least 30 years old, whilst the voting age was set at 21.&amp;lt;ref name=HB/&amp;gt; Around 55,000 voters registered for the election.&amp;lt;ref name=HB/&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
