Elections to the '''[[Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly]]''' were held in January 1972 to elect members of 114 constituencies in [[Jammu and Kashmir (state)|Jammu and Kashmir]], India.<ref>[http://www.elections.in/jammu-and-kashmir/assembly-constituencies/1972-election-results.html 1972 J&K elections]</ref> The [[Indian National Congress]] won the popular vote and a majority of seats and [[Syed Mir Qasim]] was appointed as the [[Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir]].<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.tribuneindia.com/2004/20041214/j&k.htm#5 |title=Mir Qasim’s burial today |date=13 December 2004 |access-date= 15 February 2022}}</ref> After this election, women entered the Jammu and Kashmir assembly for the first time.
