Ghani Khan Choudhury was first elected as an [[Member of Legislative Assembly (India)|MLA]] to the West Bengal state legislative assembly in 1957, winning the seat in 1962, 1967, 1971 and 1972. He served as a State [[Cabinet (government)|Cabinet Minister]] in the [[Government of West Bengal]] from 1972 to 1977. First elected to the [[7th Lok Sabha]] in [[1980 Indian general election|1980]] from [[Malda (Lok Sabha constituency)|Malda]], Choudhury would go on to represent the constituency for eight straight terms,&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;:0&amp;quot; /&amp;gt; winning again in [[1984 Indian general election|1984]], [[1989 Indian general election|1989]], [[1991 Indian general election|1991]], [[1996 Indian general election|1996]], [[1998 Indian general election|1998]], [[1999 Indian general election|1999]] and [[2004 Indian general election|2004]].
