He was a founding member and twice Secretary General of the [[students' union]] [[Union Générale des Etudiants de Tunisie]] (UGET).<ref name="tunisialive"/> He also served as Secretary General of the Freedom and Justice Association.<ref name="tunisialive"/> In 1990, he became the editor of ''[[al Fajr]]'', the flagship publication of the [[Ennahda Movement]].<ref name="tunisialive"/> He was arrested in 1990, and sentenced to prison in 1992.<ref name="tunisialive"/> He was tortured and subjected to [[solitary confinement]].<ref name="tunisialive"/> He was released on November 7, 2007, but he still fell prey to the police's intimidation and harassment.<ref name="tunisialive"/><br />
