&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Acharya Buddharakkhita&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (1922- 2013) was a [[Bhikkhu|Buddhist monk]] and prolific writer who established the [[Maha Bodhi Society]] of [[Bangalore]] and its sister bodies. It was inspired by the [[Maha Bodhi Society]] of [[Anagarika Dharmapala]], but is functionally independent. He was born in [[Imphal]], [[Manipur]], in 1922. His parents were Vishnupada and Sailavaladevi Bandopadhyaya. 1942, he took part in the [[Quit India Movement]].&amp;lt;ref name=Obituary&amp;gt;{{cite news|title=Obituary|url=http://www.deccanherald.com/content/358988/obituary.html|access-date=11 December 2013|newspaper=Deccan Herald|date=24 September 2013}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

He joined the Indian defence services after his graduation from the Institute of Engineering Technology, Calcutta. He participated in [[World War II]], after which he resigned to find truth and freedom. He became a monk in 1948. He travelled all over India and also taught in [[Sri Lanka]] and [[Burma]]. Finally he established the Maha Bodhi Society in Bangalore to propagate [[Buddhism]].&amp;lt;ref name=Reporter /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

In 1952, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Moonasinghe&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, niece of the Venerable &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Anagarika Dhammapala Maha Upasika&amp;#039;&amp;#039; —a well-known Buddhist in Bangalore, known to the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Maharaja&amp;#039;&amp;#039; donated him a land for Maha Bodhi Society.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;India Today&amp;quot;&amp;gt;{{cite news|last=Ravindran|first=Nirmala|title=Buddha lives on|url=http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/Buddha+lives+on/1/10839.html|access-date=11 December 2013|newspaper=India Today|date=4 July 2008}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He also established schools, hostels, hospitals and an [[Prosthesis|artificial limb]] centre for the society. He had written 150 books and published two periodicals.
