Zaman was born into a [[Bengali Muslim]] family in [[West Garo Hills district]] of [[Meghalaya]]. He is a practicing [[Sunni Muslim]] and has performed [[Hajj]].<ref name=islam/><br />

He was associated with the [[Indian National Congress]] party.
