==Military career==

He also served in [[World War II]] becoming Assistant Director for [[Bomb Disposal]] in 1940.<ref name=lh/> He was appointed Chief Engineer for [[IX Corps (United Kingdom)|IX Corps]] in [[North Africa]] in 1943 and successively for [[I Corps (United Kingdom)|I Corps]] in [[Normandy]] in 1944, for [[Second Army (United Kingdom)|2nd Army]] also in 1944 and for [[Fourteenth Army (United Kingdom)|14th Army]] in 1945.<ref name=lh/>

After the War he was made Deputy Director of Tactical Investigation and then transferred to [[Middle East Land Forces]] in 1947.<ref name=lh/> He became Engineer-in-Chief at the [[War Office]] in 1948 and Vice [[Adjutant-General to the Forces]] in 1952.<ref name=lh/> He was appointed [[General Officer Commanding]] [[Aldershot Command|Aldershot District]] in 1954 and retired in 1957.<ref name=lh/>

In retirement he was Lieutenant Governor of the [[Royal Hospital Chelsea]] from 1957 to 1962 and Colonel Commandant of the Royal Engineers from 1958 to 1964.<ref name=lh/>
