Wardrop was the only son of Maj.-Gen. Alexander Wardrop. He was educated at [[Haileybury and Imperial Service College|Haileybury]] and the [[Royal Military Academy, Woolwich]].<ref name="times"/>

==Military career==
Wardrop was [[Commissioned officer|commissioned]] into the [[Royal Artillery]] in 1892.<ref name=lh>[http://www.kcl.ac.uk/lhcma/locreg/WARDROP.shtml Sir Alexander Ernest Wardrop] Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives</ref> He served in the [[World War I|Great War]], initially as a [[Brigadier]] in the [[Guards Division (United Kingdom)|Guards Division]] which formed part of the [[British Expeditionary Force (World War I)|British Expeditionary Force]].<ref name=lh/> He served in [[France]] and took part in the [[Battle of Vittorio Veneto]] in [[Italy]] in 1918.<ref name=lh/>
