There he did theater, poetry and wrote for radio, when he finally got his first break in the Hindi film industry at the age of 18 as an Assistant director. In 1980, at the age of 21 he debuted as a director with film &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Shradhanjali&amp;#039;&amp;#039; starring [[Raakhee]]. It was acclaimed critically. After that, he made a number of films like &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Hukumat]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Tahalka]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. Then in 2001, the movie, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Gadar: Ek Prem Katha]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, turned out to be a milestone in his career as it created history at the box office.&lt;br /&gt;

After the success of &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Tahalka]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; Sharma took a break from filmmaking for a few years and dedicated himself to open a Studio City in India on the lines of Universal Studios in LA. The film was on the backdrop of espionage and war between India-Pakistan. The film was considered to be the most expensive film ever made in Bollywood at that time. [[Divya Khosla Kumar]] was introduced in this film. After this he made &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Singh Saab The Great]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;  with Sunny Deol and [[Prakash Raj]]. The theme of the film was against corruption in the system and it spread the message of change and not revenge. He also introduced [[Ishita Chauhan]] in this film. [[Mithun Chakraborty]] and [[Nawazuddin Siddiqui]] formed the rest of the cast.
