To create the diocese, [[Pope John Paul II]] [[promulgation|promulgated]] the [[Papal bull|bull]] "Indorum Inter Gentes";{{citation needed|date=July 2012}} it was created by transferring six districts in [[Uttar Pradesh]] out of the [[Roman Catholic Diocese of Lucknow|Diocese of Lucknow]]: [[Bareilly district|Bareilly]], [[Nainital district|Nainital]], [[Almora district|Almora]], [[Pithoragarh district|Pithoragarh]], [[Shahjahanpur district|Shahjahanpur]] and [[Pilbhit district|Pilbhit]]. The [[List of cathedrals in India|church of St. Alphonsus]] ([[Alphonsus Maria de Liguori]]) became the cathedral for the new diocese. The Diocese was made a [[suffragan bishop|suffragan]] of the [[Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Agra|Archdiocese of Agra]].<br />
