Arup Mitra received the Mahalanobis Memorial Gold Medal from the Indian Econometric Society for his outstanding contributions to quantitative economics. In 2019, he was awarded the Professor S. R. Sen Best Book Award for his book, Insights into Inclusive Growth, Employment and Wellbeing in India, recognizing the analysis of employment dynamics and poverty reduction strategies.&lt;br /&gt;
== Early life and career ==&lt;br /&gt;
Arup Mitra completed his MA in Economics , M. Phil. and [[Ph.D]] from [[Delhi School of Economics]]. His title for the PhD thesis was Urbanisation, Slums and Informal Sector: Interconnections and Interregional Variations. Thereafter he also obtained a Post Doctorate Degree from [[Northwestern University]] Evanston, USA (1995). His supervisor was Professor [[Edwin Mills (economist)|Edwin S. Mills]] and the title of the work was &amp;quot;Urban Development and Urban Ills.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;

He previously worked as a Professor of Economics at the [[Institute of Economic Growth]] (IEG), Delhi. He also served as the Director General of [[NILERD]], Government of India. He held the Indian Economy Chair at Sciences Po. Paris, worked as a senior researcher at ILO (Geneva) and served many organizations as visiting fellow/professor.   &lt;br /&gt;
