He was imprisoned during 1972–78. Chatterjee formed the Bengal-Bihar-Odisha Border Regional Committee, CPI(ML) as a separate faction. His group joined the CPI(ML) of [[Satyanarayan Singh (Bihar politician, died 1984)|Satyanarayan Singh]].
