In the [[2006 West Bengal state assembly election|2006 state assembly elections]],<ref name=vidhansabha2006/> Satyasebi Kar of [[Communist Party of India (Marxist)|CPI(M)]] won the Ashoknagar assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Dhiman Roy of [[All India Trinamool Congress|Trinamool Congress]]. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Sarmistha Dutta of CPI(M) defeated Ashok Krishna Dutt of Trinamool Congress in 2001.
