The '''Badlapur Jamun''' refers to the traditional variety of the [[jamun]] fruit (''[[Syzygium cumini]]'') grown in the [[State of India|Indian state]] of [[Maharashtra]]. ==Name==
The name "Badlapur" refers to its main region of cultivation i.e the region of Badlapur which is around 80 km from [[Mumbai]].<ref name="toi"/> Locally in the state language of [[Marathi language|Marathi]], it is locally known as Badlapur Jambhul.<ref>{{cite book |last1=Sairam |first1=T. ==Description==
It is a vivid purple fruit with a sweet-and-tart taste.<ref name="Hindtimes"/> This jamun variety from Badlpaur is unique in shape and size compared to other varieties. It is eaten for its health benefits, which include anti-diabetes and anti-cancer properties. The seeds are used to make medicine for blood sugar control, and the leaves are used to treat jaundice. ==Geographical indication==
It was awarded the [[List of geographical indications in India|Geographical Indication]] (GI) status tag from the [[Geographical Indication Registry (India)|Geographical Indications Registry]] under the [[Government of India|Union Government of India]] on 31 March 2024 (valid until 23 May 2032).
