==History==
Baghpat city, after which the district takes its name, derives its name either from ''vyagprastha'' ("land of tigers") or from ''vakyaprasth'' ("place for delivering speeches"). the city was finally named Baghpat, or Bagpat, during the [[Mughal Empire|Mughal era]]. Starting from a small commercial center known as the Mandi, the city grew in importance after the [[Indian Rebellion of 1857|1857 mutiny]] and became the headquarters of Baghpat tehsil.<ref name=BagpatAboutDistrict>{{cite web |title=About District |url=https://bagpat.nic.in/about-district/ |website=Government of Uttar Pradesh: Bagpat district |access-date=2 February 2019}}</ref>

The district has an area of {{convert|1321|sqkm|sqmi}}.<ref name=BagpatAboutDistrict /> Baghpat town lies on the east bank of the [[Yamuna|Yamuna River]],<ref name=BagpatAboutDistrict /> and is within the [[National Capital Region (India)|National Capital Region]].
