He was born in a [[Kumaoni people|Kumaoni]] [[Rajput]] family in a remote village Rawalkhet, in the [[Pithoragarh district|Pithoragarh]] district of [[Uttarakhand]] and was the youngest among 4 children, with 2 elder sisters and an elder brother.
