His father [[Karnail Singh Paras]] was a well-known [[Kavishar]].
Balwant Singh started his political career with student politics as a general secretary of Student Federation of India in 1963. He went on to join All India Sikh Students' Federation and was its president from 1968-72.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.nriinternet.com/NRIpoliticians/INDIA/A_Z/R/Ramuwalia/BIO.htm|title = Balwant Ramoowalia in Yuba City on Punjabi TV Progam}}</ref> Later he joined [[Akali Dal]] and became [[Member of Parliament]] twice from [[Faridkot, India|Faridkot]] and [[Sangrur]]. He left Akali Dal to get elected to [[Rajya Sabha]] in 1996 and served as the Union Minister for [[Social Welfare]]. He formed his own political party Lok Bhalai Party that he merged into [[Akali Dal]] in November 2011. He contested for [[Punjab, India|Punjab]] assembly in 2012 elections from Mohalli and lost.
