Born in [[Hyderabad]], Dattatreya graduated with a [[Bachelor of Science|science degree]]. He joined [[Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh]] in 1965 and was imprisoned during [[The Emergency (India)|The Emergency]]. In [[1991 Indian general election|1991]], he was elected to the [[Lok Sabha]] from Secunderabad [[constituency]] for the first time. In 1997, he was appointed [[party]] [[president (government title)|president]] for the state unit. In [[1998 Indian general election|1998]], he was re-elected and served as Union [[Minister of State]] for [[Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs|Urban Development]] in the [[second Vajpayee ministry]]. He was elected for a third consecutive time in [[1999 Indian general election|1999]] and again served as a Minister of State in [[third Vajpayee ministry]]. He lost the Lok Sabha election in [[2004 Indian general election|2004]] and [[2009 Indian general election|2009]]. The party appointed him as national vice-president in 2013. ==Political career==
Dattatreya began his political career and joined [[Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh]] in 1965. He served as a ''pracharak'' (propagator) of the organisation from 1965 to 1968. In 1980, Dattatreya officially joined the [[Bharatiya Janata Party]] (BJP).<ref name="The Hans India"/> He was appointed general secretary of the party's [[Andhra Pradesh]] unit. He served in that position until 1989.<ref name="Sakshi"/>

Dattatreya was elected to the [[Lok Sabha]] from the [[Secunderabad (Lok Sabha constituency)|Secunderabad constituency]] In [[1991 Indian general election|1991]].<ref name="BS"/> He defeated his nearest rival [[T. [[P.V. Rajeshwara Rao]] defeated Dattatreya in the [[1996 Indian general election|general election held in 1996]]. However, [[1998 Indian general election|two years later]], he defeated Rao by a margin of 185,910 votes and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from the Secunderabad constituency. In [[1999 Indian general election|1999]], Dattatreya was elected to the [[Lok Sabha]] for the third time. Between 1999 and 2001, he again served as Union MoS for Urban Development in the [[third Vajpayee ministry]]. From 2001 to 2003, he served as Union MoS for [[Ministry of Railways (India)|Railways]]. In 2003, he was again given the Urban Development portfolio.<ref name="BS"/>

Dattatreya lost the [[2004 Indian general election]]. On 21 March 2019, the BJP replaced Dattatreya with former MLA [[G. Kishan Reddy]] as its candidate from Secunderabad for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In January 2016, Dattatreya was charged with abetting the [[suicide of Rohith Vemula]], a student at the [[University of Hyderabad]].
