==Geography==
Basantrai, the eponymous CD block headquarters, is located at {{coord|24|59|41.8|N|87|12|7.7|E}}.

It is located 19 km from [[Godda]], the district headquarters.

Godda district is a plateau region with undulating uplands, long ridges and depressions. The western portion of the [[Rajmahal hills]] passes through the district. The plain areas have lost its once rich forests but the hills still retain some. According to the [[2011 Census of India]], Basantrai CD block had a total population of 93,448, all of which were rural. There were 48,317 (52%) males and 45,131 (48%) females. Population in the age range 0–6 years was 19,432. [[Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes|Scheduled Castes]] numbered 10,816 (11.57%) and [[Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes|Scheduled Tribes]] numbered 2,660 (2.85%).<ref name=census2011/>

According to the 2011 census, the total number of literate persons in Basantrai CD block was 40,198 (56.60% of the population over 6 years) out of which 25,204 (63%) were males and 14,994 (37%) were females. According to the ''District Census Handbook, Godda, 2011 census,'' as of 2001, [[Hindi]] was the mother-tongue of 603,295 persons forming 57.57% of the population of Godda district, followed by [[Santali language|Santali]] 203,186 persons (19.39%), [[Urdu language|Urdu]] 152,275 persons (14.53%) and other languages (with no details) 89,183 perons (8.51%). In Basantrai CD block in 2011, amongst the class of total workers, cultivators numbered 9,714 and formed 28.04%, agricultural labourers numbered 20,158 and formed 58.18%, household industry workers numbered 675 and formed 1.95% and other workers numbered 4,100 and formed 11.83%. Around 80% of the population depends on agriculture, the main economic activity of the district but lack of irrigation facilities is a major constraint in raising the existing low levels of productivity.
