The bridge is named after a [[Bengalis|Bengali]] engineer Bijon Basu. 35 year old Basu was an executive engineer of then [[Kolkata Improvement Trust|Calcutta Improvement Trust]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=G_FVAAAAMAAJ&amp;amp;q=Bijon+Basu+engineer|title=The Indian Concrete Journal|date=1978|publisher=Cement Marketing Company of India|language=en}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; On 2 August 1974, while he was returning home from [[Santoshpur, Kolkata|Santoshpur]] to [[Sealdah]], a gang of robbers got on the train and looted passengers.
