In 2008, Sharma contested the [[2008 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election|Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election]]s, as the [[Indian National Congress]] candidate, for the [[Hawa Mahal (Rajasthan Assembly constituency)|Hawa Mahal]] constituency. Sharma was subsequently appointed as Education Minister in [[List of chief ministers of Rajasthan|Chief Minister]] [[Ashok Gehlot]]'s Cabinet.<ref name=IndiaExpress/>

At the [[2013 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election]]s he lost the seat to [[Surendra Pareek]], the former member for Hawa Mahal, by 12,715 votes.<ref name=Election/>
