White was born in 1858 to Thomas John White of [[Bowdon, Greater Manchester|Bowdon]], [[Cheshire]] and educated at [[New College, Oxford]] from where he completed his graduation in 1881. White was [[called to the bar]] in 1883.&lt;br /&gt;

White served as the [[Advocate-General]] of the [[Madras Presidency]] and ex-officio member of the Madras Legislative Council from 1898 to 1899.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette| issue=26937|page=871 |date=11 February 1898}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He resigned in 1899 following his appointment as [[Chief Justice]] of the [[Madras High Court]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette| issue=27162 |page=806 |date=6 February 1900}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; In 1914, White was appointed to the [[Viceroy&amp;#039;s Executive Council|Council of India]].
