&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Chandra Kumar Naranbhai Patel&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (born 2 July 1938) is an [[electrical engineer]]. He developed the [[carbon dioxide laser]] in 1963;&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite journal|author=Patel, C. K. N.|year=1964|title=Continuous-Wave Laser Action on Vibrational-Rotational Transitions of CO&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;|journal=Physical Review|volume=136|issue=5A|pages=A1187–A1193|doi=10.1103/PhysRev.136.A1187|bibcode=1964PhRv..136.1187P|doi-access=free}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; it is now widely used in industry for cutting and [[Laser beam welding|welding]], as a [[laser scalpel]] in [[surgery]], and in [[Laser resurfacing|laser skin resurfacing]]. Because the [[Earth&amp;#039;s atmosphere|atmosphere]] is quite transparent to infrared light, CO&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; [[laser]]s are also used for military [[Rangefinder|rangefinding]] using [[LIDAR]] techniques.&lt;br /&gt;

Patel was born in [[Baramati]], [[India]], and received a [[Bachelor of Engineering]] (B.E.) degree from the [[College of Engineering, Pune|Government College of Engineering]], the [[University of Pune]], [[India]] and the M.S. and PhD in electrical engineering from [[Stanford University]] in 1959 and 1961, respectively.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite web|title=C. Patel&amp;#039;s discovery, in 1963, of the laser action on the &amp;lt;!--Are the transitions rovibronic or rovibrational?
