==Military career==
Stainforth was [[Officer (armed forces)|commissioned]] into the [[Indian Army]] in 1936<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=34262|page=1471|date=6 March 1936}}</ref> and fought in [[World War II]]: he transferred to the [[Royal Army Service Corps]] in 1948.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=38245|page=2066|date=25 March 1948|supp=y}}</ref>
