'''Cyril Chapman Longden''', [[Queen's Police Medal|KPM]], (1873–1913) was the sixth [[British Empire|British colonial]] [[Inspector General of Police (Sri Lanka)|Inspector-General of Police]] in [[British Ceylon|Ceylon]] (Sri Lanka).

Longden was born on 1 November 1873, the fourth child and second son of Sir [[James Robert Longden]] (1827–1891) and Alice Emily née Berridge (1846–1910). Sir James Longden was the [[List of Governors of Trinidad#British governors (1797 - 1885)|Governor of Trinidad]] between 1870 and 1874, the [[List of governors of British Guiana#Governors of British Guiana (1831–1966)|Governor of British Guiana]] between 1874 and 1876, and the [[Governors of British Ceylon#List of Governors|Governor of Ceylon]] until 1883.

Longden was the District [[Superintendent of police (India)|Superintendent of Police]], [[Chennai Metropolitan Police#History|Madras Police]].<ref>{{cite book|title=The India List and India Office List|date=1905|publisher=Harrison & Sons|place=London|page=85}}</ref>

In 1905 the position of Inspector-General of Police and Prisons in Ceylon, was separated into two posts with the incumbent Major [[Albert De Wilton|Albert Walter De Wilton]] continuing in the Prisons role and Longden, on loan from India, appointed as [[Inspector General of Police (Sri Lanka)|Inspector General of Police]] of Ceylon.<ref>{{cite book|title=Twentieth Century Impressions of Ceylon: Its History, People, Commerce, Industries, and Resources|author=Wright, Arnold|publisher=Asian Educational Services|date=1907|page=134|isbn=9788120613355}}</ref> Longden was instrumental in establishing a Police Training School for new recruits and a [[Criminal Investigation Department (Sri Lanka)|Criminal Investigation Department]].

In 1910 Ivor Edward David was appointed as Inspector General of Police and Longden returned to his position in Madras.

In 1911 he was awarded the [[Queen's Police Medal|King's Police Medal]],<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/28559/page/9366/data.pdf|title=Supplement to the London Gazette|newspaper=[[London Gazette]]|date=12 December 1911|accessdate=6 May 2016}}</ref> whilst he was the District Superintendent of Police, Indian Police, Madras.
