Jain was born on 25 January 1948.<ref name=":0" /> After completing [[Bachelor of Science|B.Sc.]] and [[Bachelor of Laws|LL.B]], he enrolled as an Advocate at Delhi on 9 August 1974. He was appointed as the Additional Judge of the [[Delhi High Court]] on 19 March 1991 and become a permanent Judge from 23 January 1992.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://delhihighcourt.nic.in/formerjudges.asp?currentPage=9|title=Former Judges|website=delhihighcourt.nic.in|access-date=2020-04-02}}</ref> He promoted as Chief Justice of [[Punjab and Haryana High Court]] on 11 March 2005. He was elevated as a Judge of the [[Supreme Court of India]] on 10 April 2006.
