Born on 14 December 1925 at [[Khulna]] in [[Bengal Presidency|Bengal Province]] (now [[Bangladesh]]), Mitra had her early education in Khulna and [[Calcutta]] (now [[Kolkata]]) before obtaining her [[doctorate]] in [[Paris]].<br />
