Sharma's political talent was first noticed by former Prime Minister [[Atal Bihari Vajpayee]]. Like many politicians in the Bharatiya Janata Party, Sharma began his political career with the [[Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad]], the student wing of the [[Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh]].
