He worked as a research associate at IISc for one year (1982–83), moved to [[Forschungszentrum Jülich]], (Jülich Research Centre) Germany as a guest scientist in 1984 and returned to IISc as a lecturer in 1986.<ref name="INSA" /> He stayed at IISc where he became the assistant professor in 1989, associate professor in 1993 and a professor in 1999.<ref name="INSA" /> He remains a professor at Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit at the institution.<ref name="CRANN" /><ref name="IISC" /><ref name="Vidwan" /> He also served as a visiting professor at the [[University of Tokyo]] (2001–02) and at the [[National Research Council (Italy)|Istituto di Struttura della Materia, CNR]] at their Rome and Trieste centres in 2002.<ref name="INSA" />

Prof. Sarma holds a number of academic positions in India and abroad. Presently, he is J.N. Tata Chair Professor at the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit of the [[Indian Institute of Science]]. Besides heading the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, he served as a guest professor at the [[Uppsala University]], Sweden,<ref name="CRANN" /> a Distinguished Scientist at the [[Council for Scientific and Industrial Research|CSIR]]-Network Institutes of Solar Energy,<ref name="CRANN" /> an honorary professor at the [[Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research]], Bengaluru<ref name="INSA" /><ref name="CRANN" /> and a distinguished visiting professor at the [[Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science]], Kolkata.<ref name="IISC" /> He has also been an adjunct professor at the [[Tata Institute of Fundamental Research]], Mumbai<ref name="CRANN" /> till October 2014 for a second term, the initial tenure being a six-year period from 2003 to 2009.<ref name="IISC" /> He also held the position of the distinguished visiting professor at the [[Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science]], Kolkata for two terms, from 2004 to 2006 and from 2009 to 2014. Prof. Sarma is a member of many professional bodies such as the Council of Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Tachnology, Indore, the Steering Committee for the Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facilities (SAIF) programme of the [[Department of Science and Technology (India)|Department of Science and Technology]], [[Government of India]] and the Academic Advisory Committee of the [[Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research]] and is the coordinator of the group set up by the [[Government of India]] for India's collaboration with the [[International Centre for Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science Applications in the Middle East]] (SESAME).
