Dwarka Nath Mitra was born in 1833 in [[Hooghly district]] and educated at [[Hooghly Collegiate School|Hooghly College]] where he excelled in mathematics and English literature.<ref name=Buckland>{{cite book|last1=Buckland|first1=C.
