The son of William John Rivett-Carnac, he was born in June 1857 at [[Steyning|Steyning, Sussex]]. K.|publisher=[[Longman|Longmans, Green, and Co.]]|location=London|year=1911|edition=3|page=444|url=https://archive.org/details/harrowschoolregi00harruoft|language=en}}</ref> From Harrow he joined the [[85th Regiment of Foot (Bucks Volunteers)|85th Foot]] as a [[Lieutenant (British Army and Royal Marines)|lieutenant]] in February 1876,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=24292|date=11 February 1876|page=589}}</ref> serving in the [[Second Anglo-Afghan War]] of 1878 to 1880.<ref name="BOOK"/> He was transferred to the [[Bengal Staff Corps]] in July 1880.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=25048|date=13 December 1881|page=6662}}</ref> He served in the [[Anglo-Egyptian War]] of 1882, where he was present at the battles of [[Kassassin|Kassassin Lock]] and [[Battle of Tell El Kebir|Tell El Kebir]].
