==Critical reception==
''Thiraipadam'' wrote that the film "itself is an age-old revenge tale that offers nothing new and so, the proceedings are predictable, most of the time."<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://thiraipadam.com/cgi-bin/movie_review.pl?id=228&user_name=bbalaji&review_lang=english&lang=english |title=Ezhumalai - Tamil movie review |website=Thiraipadam.com |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190823070755/http://thiraipadam.com/cgi-bin/movie_review.pl?id=228&user_name=bbalaji&review_lang=english&lang=english |archive-date=23 August 2019 |access-date=2019-08-23}}</ref> ''The Hindu'' wrote "The screenplay is Arjun's. So is the direction. And the action hero thrills his fans with stunts aplenty. Yet fights alone, however well choreographed, cannot make a film watchable. You need a well-narrated story — something "Ezhumalai" lacks. Most of the time action waits for no reason and seems to need no logic."<ref>{{cite news |url=http://thehindu.com/thehindu/fr/2002/06/28/stories/2002062800910201.htm |title=Ezhumalai |last=Rangarajan |first=Malathi |date=28 June 2002 |newspaper=[[The Hindu]] |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20030210213330/http://thehindu.com/thehindu/fr/2002/06/28/stories/2002062800910201.htm |url-status=dead |archive-date=2003-02-10}}</ref> ''Sify'' wrote that "the film caters strictly to the frontbenchers".<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.sify.com/movies/ezhumalai-review-tamil-pclusjbhcjchj.html |title=Review: Ezhumalai (2002) |date=24 June 2002 |website=Sify |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190823071239/https://www.sify.com/movies/ezhumalai-review-tamil-pclusjbhcjchj.html |archive-date=23 August 2019 |access-date=2019-08-23}}</ref>
