Most of the children in the past had to attend these centres for learning  [[The three Rs|3Rs]]. It had been known by other names as well, such as  &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Ezhuthu pally&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Asan Kalari&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; or [[Pallikkoodam]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Kerala District Gazetteers: Quilon, Kerala (India),&amp;#039;&amp;#039; A. Sreedhara Menon, page 423&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Ezhuthu Kalari were believed to be evolved from the ancient  traditions of [[Gurukula]] system of schooling. Teachers of these schools were addressed by the name [[Aasaan|Asan]] or  [[Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan|Ezhuthu Asan]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;People of India, Volume 27, Part 3, Anthropological Survey of India&amp;#039;&amp;#039; Kumar Suresh Singh, page 1613&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Ezhuthupally meaning schools on Shree Budda&amp;#039;s period.&lt;br /&gt;
