He began his film career as an assistant director on &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Aur Ek Prem Kahani]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Angaar&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Grahan (film)|Grahan]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. He mostly chose controversial horror themes and stories for his films and directed &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Jigyaasa]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Main Hoon Part-Time Killer]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Islamic Exorcist&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;

During creative sessions with veteran filmmaker [[Rituparno Ghosh]] while he was directing &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; in 2012, Saif discussed having a transgender antagonist dealing their gender identity with Ghosh, something which Saif later incorporated in his upcoming film &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Amma (2015 film)|Amma]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.
