He was elected to the [[Tamil Nadu legislative assembly]] as a [[Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam]] (DMK) candidate from [[Tirupporur (State Assembly Constituency)|Tirupporur constituency]] in the [[1996 Tamil Nadu state assembly election|1996 election]].
