Ghurye was born on 12 December 1893, at [[Malvan]], in present-day [[Maharashtra]].{{sfn|Pillai|1997|p=101}} His early schooling was at the [[Aryan E S High School|Aryan Education Society's High School]], [[Girgaum]], in Bombay, and then at Bahadur Khanji High School, [[Junagadh]], in the [[Junagadh State|princely state of Janugadh]].{{sfn|Pillai|1997|p=101}} He joined Bahauddin college at Junagarh, in 1912, but moved on to [[Elphinstone College]], Bombay, after a year, and received his B. A. ([[Sanskrit]]) and M. A. Ghurye was appointed as Head of Department of the Department of Sociology in Bombay University in 1924, and retired in 1959.{{Sfnm|1a1=Pillai|1y=1997|1p=102|2a1=Pillai|2y=1976|2pp=27–28|3a1=University of Mumbai|3y=_}} The department was founded by [[Patrick Geddes]] in 1919.{{Sfnm|1a1=Pillai|1y=1997|1pp=119–123|2a1=University of Mumbai|2y=_}} However, when Ghurye took it over, it was on the verge of closure.
