Her introduction to music began as a child at the age of 6 years under the guidance of her mother Padmini Srinivasan. She subsequently came under the tutelage of Vidwan Vaigal.S.Gnanaskandan and Padma Bhushan, Sangeetha Kalanidhi  Madurai [[T. N. Seshagopalan|T.N.Seshagopalan]]. She is an “A-grade” artiste of All India Radio, Chennai and performs for Doordarshan and other private television channels. Gayathri Girish was born in [[Coimbatore]] and spent her growing years at Chennai.
