&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;George Mauleverer Gowan&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (6 February 1818 – 15 July 1890) was an [[English people|English]] first-class [[cricket]]er and [[British Army]] officer.&lt;br /&gt;

The son of George Cowan, he was born in February 1818 at [[Chennai|Madras]] in [[British India]]. He was educated in England, firstly at [[Charterhouse School]] from 1829&amp;amp;ndash;32, before attending [[Harrow School]] from June 1832&amp;amp;ndash;1836.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite book |title=Charterhouse register 1769-1872 |first=R. L. |last=Arrowsmith |publisher=Phillimore |year=1974 |page=163 |isbn=9780850330816 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=448PAQAAIAAJ |language=en}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He purchased a commission in the [[97th (The Earl of Ulster&amp;#039;s) Regiment of Foot|97th Regiment of Foot]] as an [[Ensign_(rank)#United_Kingdom|ensign]] in February 1837.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette|issue=19465|date=10 February 1837|page=328}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Gowan purchased the rank of [[Lieutenant (British Army and Royal Marines)|lieutenant]] in May 1839,&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette|issue=19743|date=17 May 1839|page=1014}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; before purchasing the rank of [[Captain (British Army and Royal Marines)|captain]] in April 1845.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette|issue=20465|date=25 April 1845|page=1254}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He made his debut in [[first-class cricket]] for the [[Marylebone Cricket Club]] against [[Cambridge University Cricket Club|Cambridge University]] at [[Lord&amp;#039;s]] in 1849, before making a second first-class appearance seventeen years later in 1862 for the [[Gentlemen of the North]] against the [[Gentlemen of the South]] at [[Trent Bridge|Nottingham]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/36/36892/First-Class_Matches.html |title=First-Class Matches played by George Gowan |publisher=CricketArchive |accessdate=2019-10-23 |url-access=subscription}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Playing as a [[wicket-keeper]], Gowan scored 21 runs in his two matches, as well as taking two catches and making a single [[stumping]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/36/36892/f_Batting_by_Team.html |title=First-class Batting and Fielding For Each Team by George Gowan |publisher=CricketArchive |accessdate=2019-10-23 |url-access=subscription}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He married Anne Stratton in 1849 and lived at [[Leamington Spa]].
