Lefroy was born into an eminent Irish family in [[County Down]] in  August 1854: his father was Jeffrey Lefroy, [[Dean of Dromore]], and his grandfather, [[Thomas Langlois Lefroy]], [[Lord Chief Justice of Ireland|Chief Justice of the Queen&amp;#039;s Bench, Ireland]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;[[Who&amp;#039;s Who|&amp;quot;Who was Who&amp;quot; 1897-2007]] London, [[A &amp;amp; C Black]], 2007 {{ISBN|978-0-19-954087-7}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He was educated at [[Marlborough College|Marlborough]] and [[Trinity College, Cambridge]] and [[ordained]] in 1879.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{acad|id=LFRY874GA|name=Lefroy, George Alfred}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He joined the [[Cambridge Mission to Delhi]] the same year and eventually became head of the [[USPG|SPG]] Mission in Delhi.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;&amp;quot;A Bishop in Search of a Church: George Alfred Lefroy,&amp;quot; Cox,J in &amp;#039;&amp;#039;After the Victorians: Private Conscience and Public Duty in Modern Britain.
