Nayan Sarkar of [[Communist Party of India (Marxist)|CPI (M)]] won the 79 Hanskhali (SC) assembly seat in 2006&amp;lt;ref name=vidhansabha2006/&amp;gt; and 2001&amp;lt;ref name=vidhansabha2001/&amp;gt; defeating his nearest rivals Dr. Ramendra Nath Biswas and Abir Ranjan Biswas (both of [[All India Trinamool Congress|Trinamool Congress]]) in the respective years. In 1996,&amp;lt;ref name=vidhansabha1996/&amp;gt; Sasanka Sekhar Biswas of [[Indian National Congress|Congress]] defeated Nayan Sarkar of CPI (M).
