Nayan Sarkar of [[Communist Party of India (Marxist)|CPI (M)]] won the 79 Hanskhali (SC) assembly seat in 2006<ref name=vidhansabha2006/> and 2001<ref name=vidhansabha2001/> defeating his nearest rivals Dr. Ramendra Nath Biswas and Abir Ranjan Biswas (both of [[All India Trinamool Congress|Trinamool Congress]]) in the respective years. In 1996,<ref name=vidhansabha1996/> Sasanka Sekhar Biswas of [[Indian National Congress|Congress]] defeated Nayan Sarkar of CPI (M).
