Patel was born in [[Mumbai]], [[Bombay State]] (now [[Maharashtra]]), [[India]]. He began performing at the age of seven, when he played male and female parts in the [[Hindu]] epic &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Ramayana]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;

He made his film debut in &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Mandi (film)|Mandi]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; directed by [[Shyam Benegal]] in 1983. From 1994 to 2008, Patel worked with the Indian theatre director [[Satyadev Dubey]]. In 1995, he joined the [[Indian National Theatre]] and appeared in the play &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Neela Kamra&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.
