==Early life and career==
Henry McRae was born in [[Lahore Cantonment|Meean Meer]], [[Lahore]], on 10 November 1878.<ref name=IWM>{{cite web |title=Lives of the First World War |url=https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk/lifestory/5190957 |access-date=2 September 2025 |website=livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk |publisher=Imperial War Museum}}</ref><ref name=AWM>{{cite web |title=Lieutenant-Colonel Henry St George Murray McRae |url=https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/P11033277 |website=www.awm.gov.au |access-date=2 September 2025 |language=en}}</ref> He began his military career in 1898 as a Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion of the [[Royal Irish Regiment (1684–1922)|Royal Irish Regiment]], later transferring to the Indian Army as a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of the [[15th Ludhiana Sikhs|15th Punjab Regiment]].<ref name=IWM/> In 1901, he joined the [[14th King George's Own Ferozepore Sikhs|14th Sikhs]], and by 1915, he was serving with the [[45th Rattray's Sikhs]].<ref name=IWM/>
