==Life==
Originally named Panch Cowrie Thakur,<ref name="RoychoudhuryP34">{{cite book|first=Nalini Ranjan|last=Roychoudhury|title=Tripura through the ages: a short history of Tripura from the earliest times to 1947 A.D.|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=WoJ5AAAAIAAJ|year=1983|publisher=Sterling|page=34}}</ref> he was one of the sons of Maharaja [[Mukunda Manikya]] by his wife Prabhavati. During his father's reign, he was sent to the [[Mughal Empire|Mughal]] court of [[Murshidabad]] as a hostage.<ref>{{harvtxt|Sarma|1987|p=128}}</ref>

In 1739, after having been arrested by the Mughals on the grounds of neglecting to pay his tribute of elephants, Mukunda committed suicide. His cousin [[Joy Manikya II|Joy Manikya]] was chosen by the populace as his successor over Mukunda's sons after the former drove the Mughals out of [[Udaipur, Tripura|Udaipur]].<ref name="Gan-ChaudhuriP31">{{cite book|last=Gan-Chaudhuri|first=Jagadis|title=Tripura, the land and its people|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=SFFuAAAAMAAJ|year=1980|publisher=Leeladevi|page=31|isbn=9788121004480}}</ref> Panch Cowrie, who developed a grudge against Joy, approached [[Alivardi Khan]], the [[Nawabs of Bengal and Murshidabad|Nawab]] of [[Bengal Subah|Bengal]], for aid in claiming Tripura in 1744.<ref name="RoychoudhuryP34"/><ref>{{harvtxt|Sarma|1987|pp=128–29}}</ref> With his military support, he overthrew Joy and took the throne, assuming the reginal name Indra Manikya.<ref name="RoychoudhuryP34"/>

However, Indra was unable to rule peacefully, as Joy ran a parallel government from the Matia Hills and had the support of influential [[Zamindar]]s. This restoration proved short, as by 1746, Indra had again lost the favour of the Nawab and a large army was dispatched against him.
