Jayant Prasad was born on June 5, 1952. His father was [[Bimal Prasad]], a noted historian. After completing his schooling from [[Modern School (New Delhi)|Modern School]], he studied at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and obtained his B. A. from [[University of Delhi|Delhi University]]. He secured a master's degree in history from [[Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi|Jawaharlal Nehru University]] in 1974. After lecturing on modern [[History of India|Indian history]] for two years at St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, he entered the [[Indian Foreign Service]] in 1976.<br />
