Caillaud was [[Commissioned officer|commissioned]] into [[8th (The King&amp;#039;s) Regiment of Foot|Onslow&amp;#039;s Regiment]] in 1743.&amp;lt;ref name=odnb&amp;gt;[http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/4334 John Caillaud at Oxford Dictionary of National Biography]&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; In 1746, during the [[Jacobite rising of 1745|Jacobite rising]], he took part in the [[Battle of Falkirk (1746)|Battle of Falkirk]] and the [[Battle of Culloden]]. In 1752 he was made a [[Captain (British Army and Royal Marines)|captain]] in the [[Madras Army]]. During the [[Seven Years&amp;#039; War]] he was involved with skirmishes with the [[French Army|French]].&amp;lt;ref name=odnb/&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

In 1759 he was made [[Commander-in-Chief, India|Commander]] of the [[Bengal Army]].&amp;lt;ref name=odnb/&amp;gt; [[Edmund Burke]] later claimed that, during the course of the [[Bengal War]], Caillaud had set three official seals to a document expressing an intent to kill [[Shah Alam II|Ali Gauhar]], the Mughal Crown Prince, allegations that Caillaud strongly denied.&amp;lt;ref name=odnb/&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

He subsequently became [[Commander]] of the [[Madras Army]] in which capacity he negotiated a treat with [[Najimuddin Ali Khan|Nazim Ali]] which guaranteed Nazim Ali military support in return for occupation of the [[Northern Circars]] by the [[East India Company]].&amp;lt;ref name=odnb/&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
